David Kelly

This really has been an awful weekend in the course of world affairs - first we lost Whitney Houston on the 11th, and now tonight (February 12th) we lose an Irish legend - David Kelly, aged 82.

A consummate professional, gentleman, actor of stage and screen with an instantly identifiable voice, David Kelly will forever have changed the way we perceive and appreciate acting in Ireland, and abroad.

David Kelly - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

He starred in many many many films throughout his long career but I think, for me the one that will always stand out is that of playing Granpa George in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Of course, he also starred in a wide range of roles, from Beckett to Shakespeare, along with his now infamous appearance in Fawlty Towers as The O'Reilly man.

I've included a few of his better known performances below.

May he rest in peace.

Christmas 2011

So I'm writing this on a cold November night - the 23rd to be exact.  I've decided to start blogging a bit more, now that I've finally fixed an issue with my blog - which was causing a few seo issues (yes I know I'm rambling...) but yeah - it was stopping me for a while.  Turned out to be a simple Joomla menu assignment issue.

Anyway - to the purpose of this blog - Christmas 2011. I was coming home from work earlier tonight and I heard my first Christmas song on the radio.  I got home, turned on the TV and saw the Coca Cola Christmas ad, followed by an ad for Sainsbury's in the UK - again with tinsel and mistletoe scattered throughout.

While I'm usually a massive fan of Christmas - buy the new big bright red jumper every year, I'm wondering if, like Halloween, Valentines Day, Easter and many many other holiday periods, are we starting this whole "Celebration" too early.

The subject of Irish data plans has been a bone of contention with me for a while now.  In Ireland today, one would hope that we would pride ourselves as a 21st century, forward thinking, internet based and driven economy.

While years ago everything was seen on the internet via a 56kbps modem, which took ages to download even a single image, nowadays broadband speeds allow us to view material in a fraction of a second.  This, of course eats up data.

Personally I'm with Eircom - on an 8mb line, with a download allowance of 50GB per month.  I also have an internet stick with 02 with a 5GB allowance per month, and my main iPhone is with Meteor - again with a 5GB allowance.

Nine times out of ten, I go over my allowance with these companies - not because I choose to, or download copious amounts of material etc. - just through regular usage.  I watch things on the RTE Player, the BBC iPlayer, use the likes of Spotify, listen to online radio, watch videos on YouTube, download updates for my computer, and use it for business.  Its nothing amazing, and certainly nothing over the top.

iPhone 4S versus Android

Which brings me to the purpose of this blog - the iPhone 4S, and more specifically, 02 Ireland's data plans with the 4S.  In my opinion 02′s pricing isn’t reflective of the digital Ireland of today at all.  On the day the Dublin Web Summit opens they release their price plans and give a measly 150mb’s + calls and texts for €40 per month? 150mb’s? Seriously?

It amazes me as 02UK, granted a bigger carrier are offering a basic package of 100 minutes and 500 texts for £15.50 with a 1gb add on for £10. £25.50 is just under €29!   Does anyone else think this is strange??

As I said above, I am with Meteor – 400 minutes, 400 texts and 5GB’s of internet which can be tethered….free of charge….for €60 p/month. With 250 free texts online.  Notice the difference?

Three Ireland offers unlimited data, while Vodafone offers 500 minutes, 500 texts and 1GB of data for €65 per month.

Why 02 offer a 1GB allowance with their legacy iPhone plans from some years ago and now take it down to 150mb's is beyond me.   We haven't stopped using data - its gone through the roof!

I'll put a caveat on this blog too - I'm not giving out specifically to 02 - I was with them for years and was quite happy with the service - I'm genuinely wondering what made them reduce their data allowance.

In the mean time, I found this quite interesting infographic on Twitter - and thanks to @smemon for this.  I've included the data allowance section of it below, but to view the entire infographic, click here

<rant>

Okay, bit of a rant for today.........on people playing music off their phones in buses, trains and along the streets.

Why?  Buy a pair of headphones.  I don't want to hear whatever you're listening to coming out of a tinny phone speaker, ruining the song.

Apparently, according to Urban Dictionary, this is known as "Sodcasting" - "The act of playing music through the speaker on a mobile phone, usually on public transport. Commonly practised by young people wearing polyester, branded sportswear with dubious musical taste."

BBC News published an interesting article about it a few months ago - link is at the end of this - in which they referenced that in 2006, "the Piped Music and Showing of Television Programmes Bill was presented to Parliament, calling for "the wearing of headphones by persons listening to music in the public areas of hospitals and on public transport" to be made compulsory, although it never made it into law."

I was walking through town the other day and I heard someone playing Eminem via, I think their HTC phone.  Just holding it in their hands while walking with their friends.  The friends were all talking, so how the girl could actually hear the lyrics is beyond me.

And, do I have to be the one to point out that playing it on full volume via your speaker ruins your battery life?

Then again, that might not be such a bad thing really....

Steve Jobs on Apple.com

A man who truly changed the world.  I'm typing this on an Apple MacBook, having seen a tweet about the passing of Steve Jobs on my iPhone.  I'm using my iPad to monitor the reaction to his death, and I'm listening to an online radio stream through my iPod touch.

None of this would be possible without the creative genius that is Steve Jobs.

I only remarked to a friend earlier today about the keynote Apple put on yesterday - 6pm Irish time.  I was sitting at my desk, in sheer glee - with a cup of tea - waiting for the announcements.  It just goes to show what sort of a product and a brand they have created - driven of course by Steve himself.

No more will we be able to email our questions to steve@apple.com and get back those quirky one liner answers.

A lovely tribute was put on the Apple website following his death.

Now a fully signed up premium member, I came across this little gem below in the What's New section.

It's by Maria Mena, real name Maria Viktoria Mena, a 25 year old singer from Norway.

The song below is from her 5th studio album - "Viktoria" released on September 23rd 2011.  It reached number 5 in the Norway charts and number 17 in the Netherlands MegaCharts.

So, right now I'm on a train from Tralee to Dublin.  Well, sort of - we had to do the usual Irish thing of changing at Mallow (pronounced Meall-a like).   Why the transport system in this country can't actually put on more than one direct train to Dublin from Tralee is beyond me.

But anyway we'll get over that.  This blog or rant really started last night when I had to book my train ticket.

I usually prefer to fly up from Kerry Airport to Dublin and take a bus in - its cheaper if its just for the day, and I'm up in 30 minutes.  So…off I went last night to the Ryanair site to see if I could book a flight up - only to find out that of course they stopped flying there a few weeks ago.  The new PSO providers - Aer Arann aren't due to take up the contract until the 1st of November - grr indeed.

So, my only other means of getting up (bar bus…and not even go there) was by train.

How much would you think a train ticket for 4 hours should cost?  Rough cost of a regular trip to Dublin by car?  Right, double it and add on 12 Euro for posterity.

That's right - 72 Euro (return) to Dublin.  Scandalous!! I can go to the UK and take a journey of the equivalent distance and pay half that.  This on foot of a planned (or possibly already implemented) price hike by the good folks in Bus Eireann.  Which, while we're on the subject has an incredibly poor website - the journey planner - I'm sorry - what?  Its built by people who understand technology - fair enough, but did they ever think of doing some user testing on it? Instead of actually just putting up confusing messages for people on screen.

ANYWAY…moving on - I went through all of the rigmarole of logging in, booking my ticket, picking my seats (which we'll come to later)…..and what do I get when I click Purchase Tickets?  "We are unable to process your ticket claim right now due to…" some error or something.  Great.  Second attempt.  Same thing.  (At this point I was getting more and more annoyed).

Oh forgot to say that I tried the first time to book it using a Laser card - which doesn't incur an extra cost (for what I don't know) - Lets try with a credit card instead - extra Euro - now that works - what a surprise!

We run forward to the next day now - I'm going down, in plenty time for my train.  What do I find?  I park my car, and the ticket machines are out of order.  Great.   It was 3pm so I figured my chances of getting a ticket are pretty slim - and the car is going to be picked up later tonight anyway.  So I leave it and write a note (and take a photo of the offending ticket machine) saying that it was out of order).  If I get a text this evening saying there was a lovely slip of paper on it, Joe Duffy will be getting a phonecall!

Get on the train (which is 10 minutes late) and off we go.   First journey from Tralee to Mallow is pretty uneventful - I actually get quite a lot of work done (and amazingly the 3G holds up).  Get into Mallow…and we wait for the train to Dublin, which is fine - no problem with that.

Whenever I book a train ticket, as its "free" I always make to book my seats as well.  I know some people prefer to have seats on there own - in other words the 2 seater ones, but I like to have a table - even if I have to share it with someone else.  So that's what I do - book 4 seats (2 x up/down to Mallow/Tralee and 2 x up/down to Dublin/Mallow).

So isn't it absolutely wonderful then when you get on the train and someone is sitting in your seat?  In my case it was a whole load of friends who wouldn't move  - seriously - every time the train stops a message comes on saying "Please do not occupy pre-booked seats" - why would you?!  The train was pretty empty anyway - so why would you sit somewhere where there is a name?

At this point I've gone past Charleville and haven't been asked for my ticket once….

We'll get over all of that….I found a seat behind and am now quite happy typing this…next we move onto the wonderful wifi.

Every day its tweeted which trains have wifi and which ones don't.  Now, these are supposed to be amazing new coaches, which cost millions (and which we were told about many many many times in amazing adverts on TV).  So why oh why can't the wifi be enabled throughout the entire fleet (or at least on every single train traveling between Cork and Dublin?).  The 3G signal doesn't just disappear during the 3.15pm service and re-appear on the 7pm service - the signal is always there - why can't it be turned on?

Also…I should also point out at this point something I find curious - anytime a train is said to have wifi, there are no plugs - I know, I'm probably getting a bit paranoid about it but still.  Next time you're on a train with wifi (if you're lucky enough to find one) see if it has plugs.

All I can say is massive kudos to Apple and their personal hotspot (and to Meteor, whom I must say are providing pretty good internet access the whole way up…).

One last thing - I love being cold - I really do - but….why are all trains absolutely freezing?  Surely there are climate control measures on board - keep it at a nice 19-21 degrees - not 15 or whatever setting is currently on board this train!!

Right, rant over.  Still a little while from Dublin, but I had a few minutes spare and said I'd get this off my chest.  Let me know your thoughts below if you'd like.

I'm off to buy some overpriced Lyons tea.  Why can't I get Barry's? :-(

D

P.S. - Someone on this train either loves wedges or else needs to rethink their aftershave.

Holidays!

A recent survey from Thomas Cook and the Association of British Travel Agents revealed 20 of the most ridiculous complaints by holiday-makers made to their travel agent.

In my random musings in various tech websites this afternoon, I came across this rather interesting article about Facial Recognition.   Bit scary really, but its the way the world is going.

My thanks to Business Insider (direct link to this article http://davidod.net/oVQrnr ) and to the author Dylan Love (follow him on Twitter @_dtl)

Article:

Facebook has famously raised concerns over member privacy, but by no means is it the only offender.

As technology in the security and surveillance sector continues to improve, Alternet points out 5 everyday places where you could be tracked with facial recognition. Our sumamary appears below, but check out their report for all the details.

1. On the streets. This fall, 40 police departments will be equipped with the Mobile Offender Recognition and Information System (MORIS) device. It's an iPhone app that identifies people based on pictures of their faces.

2. The DMV. If going to the DMV wasn't unpleasant enough, now slightly less than half of the DMV branches are equipped to run someone's picture through a biometric database.

3. Las Vegas casinos, and Kraft and Adidas stores. Casinos are obviously interested in catching known card cheats. But Kraft and Adidas stores recently decided to install a targeted advertising system in their stores to serve up custom ads built around your basic personal details.

4. Bars. An app called SceneTap uses cameras installed in bars to determine a male-to-female ratio. The sole purpose is to help users guide their decision making process on which bar is best to go to for "companionship."

5. All of Japan. They're already way ahead of the curve on this. Facial recognition is already at work from vending machines that make recommendations to truck stops that gauge the tiredness of drivers.
